211 Success Story

This past December, a mother of two, who was also expecting a child, called 211 looking for housing, food, and prenatal services. What she wasn’t expecting was to lose her job and be evicted from her apartment, due to the economic impacts of COVID-19. The mother stated that she and her children had been sleeping in a friend’s car, not wanting to stay in a shelter because of the fear of contracting COVID-19.

Her call to 211 is where hope began.

The 211 Call Specialist referred the mother to a medical clinic to get prenatal services, to local food pantries, and to WIC (Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children) for food vouchers. A listing of transitional and low-income housing was provided to the mother and, upon a follow-up call, the mother shared that they are doing much better. She was able to schedule an appointment at the medical clinic and has since received prenatal services. Her baby is healthy and is doing great. The family is now placed in transitional housing, and will soon be moving to permanent housing. The mother regularly visits food pantries, and is using all the available resources referred to her help stabilize her family. The mother expressed deep gratitude to 211-sharing that her children are so happy now to have a steady place to stay and have food to eat.
