211 Success Story

Where do you turn to when you have concerns about your child’s development? There are so many resources and services available to help, but where should you start? Call 2-1-1!

Last month, a mother did exactly that. She called 2-1-1 in hopes that she could be pointed in the right direction for help and resources for her 3-year old daughter, who she said was not able to speak. The mother stated that she felt that her daughter would simply “grow out of this non-verbal stage,” but when compared to other children the same age, she became increasingly concerned about her daughter’s development.

The 211 Call Specialist offered information about the Help Me Grow Program, and explained that it would be beneficial to complete an Ages & Stages Questionnaire to help assess possible developmental issues the child may be having. The Call Specialist explained to the Mom that the Help Me Grow staff would be able to connect her with a local agency that would be able to provide further one-on-one assistance. 

The Mom, feeling much more relieved, agreed to contact the Help Me Grow Program to begin the assessment process. The Mom thanked the 2-1-1 Call Specialist for her reassurance- helping her feel less overwhelmed when seeking services. The Help Me Grow team received the call from the Mom, and 211 became more than a helpline to this worried parent, it became a lifeline.
